Setting Up A Custom Domain

When you first create your Pressly hub and preview it in the browser, you'll notice that the URL is your pressly.com/userID/hubURL (ex. pressly.com/acme-co/hubname). You may want to setup a custom domain to send out to your customers.

There are three different types of domains that you can setup to point to your Pressly hub:

Depending on your setup, this could take up to 48 hours to start pointing at Pressly.

If your changes have not taken effect within 48 hours, contact us as support@pressly.com.

Creating a Subdomain

Using the example above, instead of using acme-co.pressly.com, you can choose to direct your users to hub.example.com.

  1. Sign in to your domain registrar (wherever you purchased your domain name) and setup a new subdomain. In DNS language, this is called a record.
  2. When you setup your new subdomain record, it will ask you what type of record this new entry is going to be. You'll want to select CNAME. This basically means that this subdomain is an alias (or a shortcut) for something else.
  3. It will then ask you to put in a value for where the CNAME should point to. Enter hub.pressly.com into that field.

Awesome, your DNS is now setup! But we're not quite done yet.

Updating your Custom Domain Settings on Pressly

You'll need to tell Pressly about the new subdomain you just set up so we know to look for it.

  1. Log in to your Pressly dashboard.
  2. Navigate to the hub that you want to configure using the  User menu.
  3. Click the  Settings icon on the cover image.
  4. Click the Custom Domain tab.
  5. Enter your subdomain (e.g. hub.acme-co.com) on the Custom Domain field.
  6. Click the Save button.

Creating a Root Domain

Using the above example, we want to point our Pressly hub to a brand new domain we've just purchased, example.com.

  1. Sign in to your domain registrar (wherever you purchased your domain name).
  2. Navigate to the page where you edit your root domain. (This is typically the record listed as an A record and does not include the WWW).
  3. Navigate to the page where you can edit the record you're interested in.
  4. Change the the IP address to 52.205.11.92 and save your changes.
  5. Return to your list of records and find the "WWW" record. This will typically be a CNAME record.
  6. Click to edit this record.
  7. Change the value for this record to hub.pressly.com and save your changes.
  8. Follow the steps in the section Updating your Custom Domain Settings on Pressly

Serving a Hub on an Existing Website

This particular option is more technical and will require the help of your webmaster administrator.

  1. Log in to your Pressly dashboard.
  2. Navigate to the hub that you want to configure using the  User menu.
  3. Click the  Settings icon on the cover image.
  4. Click the Custom Domain tab.
  5. Enter your website (e.g. www.acme.com) in the Custom Domain field.
  6. Enter /hub in the Host Path field.
  7. Click the Save button.
  8. Configure a new backend on the web server of your website (e.g. www.acme.com).

The configuration must reverse proxy all requests to /hub* of your Webserver to https://hub.pressly.com.

Make sure to forward the HTTP X-FORWARDED-HOST request header to the Pressly backend.
